Jeet Kune Do is a modern system of self-defence based on the teachings and philosophy of Bruce Lee, the King of Kung Fu. JKD is built on Simplicity, Directness, Efficiency and Speed. It encapsulates all four fighting distances (Kicks, Boxing, Close Combat and Ground Combat) and uses specific Strategies, Concepts and Principles. JKD is constantly developing and encompasses the dangers of modern life, so that, after the early demise of its founder, it lives on through his friend and heir Dan Inosanto. This book serves to teach from level 1 to 3, although it introduces other developing areas. It is useful for any interested reader, who is involved in understanding a realistic method of self defence developed by Bruce Lee. It also serves as a support for every sportsperson and Martial Artist. Style is totally irrelevant, as Jeet Kune Do can be used for or against any style, freely using the motto "using no way as a way". "Having no limitation as limitation" Bruce Lee.

The Attack Techniques in the Middle Distance
Hand Techniques 1-12 In the middle distance you are close enough to use the JKD Hand Techniques. Mostly, the attacks occur in combination with deception moves but they are very fitting for simple, direct attacks. The strikes, along with the steps must always be practised in combination with legwork and evasive movements, And always changing from the head to the body. There’s a little rule you should take note of, but it is not law, if you want to keep the risk of injury as low as possible: “Grasp hard targets, such as the head, with a soft weapon, like, for example, a palm hit or a hammerfist, and the softer targets like the body abdomen, throat and eyes with hard weapons, such as knuckles, hand edge and fingers.” Pay attention to the rule “Hand before Foot”. In an attack the hand starts before the foot as if it is being drawn forwards. Most confrontations begin in the middle distance. This is why it is important to learn to use all the strikes from this distance. You should be in the position to use the right strike, at any moment to attack or counter. In Jeet Kune Do there are the most diverse hand techniques and strikes in order to choose the best weapon, to employ a stop strike to the correct attack point, at the decisive moment. From the middle distance you are in a position to change from long or short distance, so that you have more opportunities to choose the right strategy for defence. To attack, the different weapons, like finger, edge of the hand and the fists are incorporated in different variations. Here, the hips also have an important part to play, as the generate the highest strike power. Equally important is the use of legwork. The aim should be to put the attacker out of action with the first hit. If this isn’t achieved, the attack can be brought to an end with further combinations until you reach your goal. In the beginning the techniques should, again, be practised without a partner as shadowboxing, then go over to sparring with a partner and with mitt work. The techniques should also be practiced with the Punchinbag and other training equipment, in order to improve power and precision. Here are the individual strike techniques. 1. Finger Jab (Biu Jee) 2. Half Closed Fist (Choap Chuie) 3. Vertical Fist Strike (Chung Chuie) 4. Ball of the Hand Strike (Wong Jern) 5. Backfist Strike (Gua Chuie) 6. Hammerfist (Sut Sil) 7. Side of the Hand Strike (Sut Sao) 8. Jab 9. Cross 10. Hook 11. Uppercut 12. Overhead 13. Straight Blast Jik Chung Chuie 1. Finger Jab (Biu Jee) The Finger Jab or Biu Jee is one of the most effective attacks in Jeet Kune Do and the longest weapon in the middle distance. In comparison to the fist strike, you have a 10-15cm longer reach. It is mainly used on soft parts such as the eye. But also, other attack points such as, for example, the neck and groin. It can also be effectively used as a decoy to be followed with, for example, a kick. The stab can be used with loose or stiff fingers, depending on the attack point. It is used 80% of the time with the leading hand, as it is nearest the target. But in the form of combination, trapping or grappling, the back hand is also used. With a stab in the eye, you deprive the attacker of sight so that he can’t see further attacks and is, therefore, unable to fight in the middle and long distance. The stab in the eye should be so delivered that the attacker only realises when it is too late. That is why it must be executed without preparation, fast and at the right moment. (Timing). As it has a longer reach than a fist, it is optimal as a counter as it reaches its target sooner. With this technique it is not out of the question, that your opponent is seriously hurt and permanently loses his sight. Thus, it is only used in emergency situations. The execution of this comes from the Alert Position, the leading hand, lightning fast, in a straight line forwards, with a whipping, hitting, snapping motion. The back hand is placed as protection at the height of the shoulder with a low elbow. Make sure that, during the execution of this, you are relaxed and, just before you strike, to tighten your muscles, and the hand, as with all hand techniques, is immediately withdrawn. Very important, as with all hand techniques, is the deployment of the hip and shoulder. To the eyes To the throat 2. Half Closed Fist (Choap Chuie) The Half-Closed Fist or Choap Chuie, is mainly used in an attack to the throat. But it can also be used to attack the face, ribs and abdomen. In comparison to a fist strike, it has about a 5cm longer reach, and, as with the finger stab, reaches its target faster. In contrast to the finger stab it is more stable due to the outstretched knuckle, and can be used to attack harder targets such as ribs. As with the finger stab, it can be used as a deceptive, apparent attack. It is also mainly delivered with the leading hand. In its execution the forefinger is tense and bent, so that you can hit with the points of the knuckle. Then, without warning, as with the finger stab you strike forwards, fast and powerfully. After the attack, you withdraw the hand as fast as possible, back to the start position. Because an attack to the throat can be potentially deadly, it should only be used in life threatening or very dangerous situations, as in an armed attack. Attack to the Throat 3. Vertical Fist Strike (Chung Chuie) The straight, Vertical Fist Strike or Chung Chuie is the most important blow in Jeet Kune Do and is, therefore, used most often, as it has devastating power when employed correctly. As the name says, this strike is delivered with the vertical fist which is very fast and direct. With this weapon you can attack practically any part of the body, which makes it very flexible. It should preferably be used on the 36 attack points, as these are the most sensitive. As the whole of the body is involved in this strike, its effect is very powerful and can, in certain places, be deadly. It works wonderfully well in a deceptive context, whereby its full power can be developed in a direct, sudden, push, step and slide combination. It is also astoundingly useful as a counter attack. As one has the stronger side facing forwards in the alert position, this weapon is used with the leading hand, in the middle distance, it is close to its target, so that an attack can be fast and precise. As the lower three knuckles are used to strike you are very stable and the power is transferred directly to the target. In its execution, from Bai Jong, the front elbow is dropped in order to better protect the body and generate more power. The back hand is placed at shoulder height in front of the chin, also with a low elbow. From this position the strike is executed straight forwards suddenly. At the same time the hip and shoulder are twisted explosively to increase the strike power. Through the raised heel of the back leg, you push forward even more. Shortly before hitting the target, with an added snapping movement from the wrist, the power is further increased. Because nearly all of the joints and muscles are applied in the close distance, an almost unbelievable power can be achieved in order to render your opponent unconscious and, therefore incapable. The vertical fist strike must be practiced very often to achieve perfection. You should be able to use it suddenly in every situation and from every position. That is why it is important to practise it from different positions and evasive movements in combination with legwork. In the beginning it is best practised, again, alone in the form of shadowboxing and then to change over to partner work and equipment such as the sandsack, mittwork and sparring. To the nose To the chin To the throat 4. The Palm of the Hand Strike (Wong Jern) The Palm of the Hand Strike or Wong Jern, has the shortest reach in the middle distance. Because of this, there is less risk of injury than with the other hand techniques, as the ball of the hand is used to strike. This hit also has enormous strike power when applied correctly. It is mainly used to attack the nose, chin, jaw and ribs. The execution is the same as the vertical fist, just that the ball of the hand strikes. It is very well suited for trapping/grappling distance. Attack to the nose 5. Backfist Hit (Gua Ghuie) The Backfist or Gua Ghuie, is, in comparison to the previous techniques, not a straight hit. It is mainly used for attacks from the side, and in deception and it comes very surprisingly. Also, it is not as powerful as a straight fist strike, but it can lead to a K.O. if it hits the jaw, the ear or the temple. The main attack points, as mentioned before, are the temple, the jaw and the ears, but the body and abdomen are also target areas. It can be used from higher or lower cover. Whereby the lower cover generates more strike power. As with every strike in JKD, it begins from the Alert position, the strike is with the knuckles of the back of the hand, which resembles a stretched feather. It is snapped out mostly from the elbow, but the shoulders and hips play their part again here. It is found very often in trapping. 6. Hammerfist (Sut Sil ) The Hammerfist or Sut Sil is also, for the most part, used in an attack...
