This book contains a critical edition of seven troubadour songs in Galician-Portuguese by Dom Dinis, King of Portugal (1261-1325). In 1990, the earliest document with Portuguese secular music (also the only medieval document with cantigas by King Dom Dinis, containing the only known music for the Galician-Portuguese cantigas d'amor) was discovered at the Torre do Tombo in Lisbon by Professor Harvey L. Sharrer (Un. of California at Santa Barbara). This discovery was the most important in the field of Galician-Portuguese literature and music since 1914, when Pedro Vindel found the cantigas d'amigo by Martin Codax. In order to prepare the critical edition of the Lisbon document (a fragment of a folio belonging to a medieval songbook), Prof. Sharrer invited Manuel Pedro Ferreira, who in 1986 had successfully edited Martin Codax, to join him in studying the musical notation, transcribe it, and put it into a larger context.

In the meanwhile, the fragment was purportely "restored", in fact washed out of much of its original musical information. The photographs and the paleographical transcriptions by Prof. Ferreira made before this "restoration" thus became the best witnesses to the document's primitive state. This critical edition presents therefore detailed photographic information before and after this disaster and also Ferreira's early set of transcriptions. The idea of an illustrated book is thus crucially important.

The musicological contents of this book were originally written in 1993-94, together with additional chapters by Prof. Sharrer, centered on the historical context and the literary-philological aspects of these songs. The whole should have been published in 1995, but Prof. Sharrer, due to personal problems, never handed in his final text. The money which had been raised to support the cost of the edition was re-allocated, and the publisher lost interest. Since the publishing effort was essentially of a personal nature (the publisher would not fully commit itself without receiving a subsidy), Prof. Ferreira had to support the debts relative to most photographs and the professional copying of the musical examples. As of 1997, Prof. Sharrer did not recover from his ailment and authorized Prof. Ferreira to publish his contribution independently as a first volume of the intended edition, using his edition of the poetic texts and the full illustrative material. Prof. Ferreira had to modify the order of the chapters, make slight revisions and write a new Introduction. In the absence of fresh proposals by Portuguese publishers and having experimented the hardships of fund-raising, the author accepted an offer from Reichenberger, thus allowing the work to be published ten years after the completion of the original text. Here, for the first time, the seven melodies are presented and put into context, and all the relevant photos published, allowing access to the manuscript in both its original and present condition.
