Corporations pursue with Corporate Venture Capital financial and strategic objectives at the same time. The performance measurement especially of strategic returns as well as their integration into a balanced performance measurement system is an interesting research question with high relevance for practitioners.
This thesis presents a new approach of performance measurement of Corporate Venturing using the Balanced Scorecard concept. Financial and strategic results and their performance drivers were integrated into a Balanced Scorecard with the management perspectives financials, collaboration and networking, processes and potentials. Besides this, a Portfolio Company Scorecard Monthly is created for the reporting of single investments to the Corporate Venturing unit. In addition, a cockpit-system is designed, integrating the mentioned performance measurement instruments into an IT-system.
This thesis was developed in cooperation and with the support of Bain & Company, Munich und scientifically guided by Prof. Dr. D. Seese at the University of Karlsruhe at the Institute of Applied Informatics und Formal Description Methods.
In November 2002 this thesis has been awarded by the FGF Entrepreneurship Research Association with the „FGF-Diploma-Thesis-Award“ at the 6th Annual Conference G-Forum in Wuppertal, Germany.
