Seit den 1960er-Jahren verwendete der Bildhauer Franz Bernhard (1934–2013) bevorzugt die Materialien Holz und Eisen. Noch während des Studiums an der Karlsruher Akademie begann er damit, aus einfachen Holzbalken gerüsthaft die Form von Büsten nachzubauen. Eisen als zweiter Werkstoff bot die Möglichkeit der freien Verknüpfung und weit auskragender Winkel. Die autonome, konstruktive Formkonstellation und das Bild des Menschen – besonders der Kopf als Motiv – bilden die Kristallisationspunkte seines Werks. In der Gegenüberstellung von Konstruktion und Dynamik, Labilität und Massivität erfasst Franz Bernhard die Widersprüchlichkeit des modernen Menschen und weist diese in großer plastischer Präsenz aus.

The autonomous, constructivist constellation of forms and the image of man – especially the head as a key motif – were the primary focus of his oeuvre. In the juxtaposition of construction and dynamism, instability and solidity, Franz Bernhard captured the contradictory nature of modern man manifested as a grand sculptural presence.
