This work provides an overview of a wide range of approaches to written text analysis. It includes both classic and specially commissioned papers by distinguished authors, which share a common linguistic framework. Malcolm Coulthard is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Birmingham. His recent publications include three edited collections, Talking about Text, 1986, Discussing Discourse, 1987, Advances in Spoken Discourse Analysis, 1992, and, in Portuguese, Linguagem e sexo and Traduçao: teoria e prática, both published in 1991.
