Coombs, W. Timothy
W. Timothy Coombs (PhD Purdue University in Public Affairs and Issues Management) is the George T and Glady H Abell Professor in Liberal Arts in Department of Communication at Texas A&M University. His primary areas of research are crisis communication and CSR including the award-winning book Ongoing Crisis Communication. He is the current editor for Corporation Communication: An International Journal. His research has appeared in Management Communication Quarterly, Public Relations Review, Corporate Reputation Review, Journal of Public Relations Research, Journal of Communication Management, Business Horizons, and the Journal of Business Communication.

W. Timothy Coombs, PhD, Purdue University, is a full professor in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida. He is the 2002 recipient of the Jackson, Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the Public Relations Society of America for his crisis research, which led to the development and testing of the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). SCCT provides recommendations about how crisis managers should respond to crises by evaluating key elements of the crisis situation. Dr. Coombs has published widely in the areas of crisis management and preparedness, including a number of journal articles and book chapters. His research includes the award-winning book Ongoing Crisis Communication as well as Code Red in the Boardroom: Crisis Management as Organizational DNA. He is coauthor of a number of books, including It’s Not Just PR and Public Relations Strategy and Application: Managing Influence with Sherry Holladay and Today’s Public Relations with Robert Heath. He has edited The Handbook of Business Security Volumes 1 and 2 and coedited The Handbook of Crisis Communication with Sherry Holladay. He was part of the Darden School of Management’s Batten Institute “Defining Leadership: A Forum to Discuss Crisis Leadership Competency” and has a chapter in the related publication, Executive Briefing on Crisis Leadership. Dr. Coombs has lectured on the subject of crisis management at various venues in the United States, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Australia. He has also consulted with companies in the petrochemical and health care industries on crisis-related topics.
