UNIT 1: My Body Is Ready For Birth I am Prepared In Pregnancy For My Amazing Birth This unit starts with a snapshot of where you are emotionally with your pregnancy and birth. When you have finished the course, take a look back at this section and see how far you have come. You will be amazed at your transformation! Later, we explore the easy, calm and instinctive births of animals, and discover the reasons why many women birth so differently. Our modern birthing culture is based on irrational fears and negative beliefs that fundamentally influence our births. We examine how our birthing history shaped the society’s thinking. Next, we move to the important task of preparing our body in pregnancy. With our body ready for birth, the experience becomes easier, quicker and more importantly, we are less likely to need medical intervention. Mother’s Thoughts “After a really terrible experience with my daughter, I was determined to find a different way when I got pregnant this time. My biggest fear came for the old memories which still gave me nightmares at times. I felt sure that the same thing would happen again. When I did the Hypnobirthing Hub course, there were two things which really stood out for me. First was that I can now see why and when things started to go wrong the last time. If only I had known all of this the first time around. Second, the “Fear Release” exercise made so much difference; they were really powerful. I actually felt the bad memories leave my mind. It did feel a bit surreal. I was able to completely let go of them and they didn’t come back, at all. The nightmares also stopped. And with all the other techniques that I had learned, I spent the rest of my pregnancy looking forward to the birth and not dreading it. I think the key thing for me was being completely honest with myself about how I was really feeling about the birth, and not just pushing it all deep down. I know that if I buried it, it would just come back on the day. I had a wonderful birth. Baby Asha was born peacefully and easily in the hospital after six hours of labour. None of the old fears came back and I was so pleased how calm, focused, and relaxed I was. I wish every woman around the world had access to these techniques. Thanks so much. I can’t begin to thank you for the key role you played in our birth”. Sima Hardy, Suva, Fiji How Are You Feeling About Your Birth? Throughout your pregnancy, the majority of your antenatal care will be focused on the physical well-being of you and your baby. However, your emotional well-being plays an important part in your approach to pregnancy and birth. By understanding a bit more about your own feelings, beliefs, hopes and fears, you can begin to separate out those feelings. You can then identify which are useful and beneficial, and know those that are not useful and do not serve a positive purpose. Before you go on any further, get yourself a pen and spend some time thinking about each of these questions. You can write them in the folder or on a separate piece of paper. However, I would urge you to write them down, as this will encourage you to be focused, specific and conscious about your feelings and thoughts. It will also help you later on when we go through the “Release All Fear Of Birth” exercise and recording. Talk to your most quiet, peaceful self… Ask… Then answer by writing it all down. There is no right or wrong answer. Just your most honest questions, fears, concerns and issues. Just write it all down. Remember, this is just a snapshot of where you are right now. Once you have all the tools, resources and understanding that this course provides, you will be amazed at how much more confident, calm and positive you have become about birth. Examining how you feel about pregnancy and birth right now is the first step to accepting - and then letting go of any unnecessary or unhelpful thoughts. Your Pregnancy Thoughts Was this a planned pregnancy? How did you feel about your journey to conception? What were your initial thoughts about being pregnant? How do you feel now about being pregnant? Are you welcoming the changes that are taking place? What are three strong emotions that you feel when you think about being pregnant? Do you feel you have all the support that you need? Other thoughts? Your Birth Thoughts What are your concerns or fears about giving birth? Where are you planning to give birth? What are the main reasons for choosing that place? Who will be with your during the birth? Why have you chosen them to support you? How well do you think they will support you? What was your own birth like? Does your birth affect how you will give birth? How have births from friends, family or TV/movies affected your views on birth? If you have given birth before, write down any memories, feelings or events that you want to change this time around. Have you ever been to a birth? If so, what were your feelings about it? In an ideal situation, how would you like the birth of this baby to be? (as detailed as you can). Parenthood Thoughts What sort of a parent do you aim you be? Could your own childhood affect your ability to be the parent you want to be? What sort of parent will your partner be? How do you feel about this? What steps will you take to be the best possible parent? Animals Have Easy Births… So Why Not Us? We have instinctive knowledge to create a child. The DNA within us as women, tells our body how and when to release an egg. It tells us how to prepare a safe place for the egg to be fertilised, and the recipe to grow a perfect child. Then the DNA within our growing babies provides all the instructions as to when and how to create brains, lungs, eyelashes, ears and so on. The DNA within us has ensured that the physical structure of our uterus and pelvis is perfectly designed as well. It is structured to change and adapt to accommodate our growing babies. Our female brain and body work in complete harmony, producing all the right hormones throughout our pregnancies and to the birth of our children. Once our babies are born, our genetic makeup ensures that our breasts can then provide all the nourishment and immunity that our children needs for the first part of their life. All Cells Are Designed To Fulfill A Purpose All the cells in your body have a purpose, and they instinctively know what to do. Look at these processes closely - No one ever taught your body how to digest food or how to fight off a cold. Your heart is continually contracting and releasing twenty-four hours a day. Did you ever have to teach a child how to do a bowel movement? All of these functions happen painlessly in a healthy body. Yes, if there is damage or a block of energy from things such as stress, fear or bad eating habits, then these functions can become painful or discomforting. So with such an amazing DNA set-up, and such a perfect system, why is it that so many women have lost the belief in their body’s ability to give birth? INFOMATION: ln the same way, your body was designed to birth your baby without significant pain. lt is only when there is a change from the natural process, such as an induction or an emotional block from things such as fear, tension or anxiety that the birthing process becomes excessively painful. Essentially, You And I Are Mammals We are very sophisticated, clothed and clever, but just mammals nonetheless. Our primal needs and the primal needs of babies are still essentially the same as with other mammals. Mammals are classified by the fact that a female grows her baby within her body. Like mammals, her brain then secretes a number of hormones that trigger and maintain the muscular movements needed to give birth, and she then provides milk for her offspring once they have been born. Maybe you have seen wild animals give birth on a nature programme, or you have taken a sneak peek at your cat giving birth. Given the right conditions, i.e., an undisturbed natural setting and environment, what are the key characteristics of a mammal’s birth experience? INFORMATION: All mammals can hold back or bring on labour depending on how safe they feel. Characteristics Of A Mammal’s Birth First, they find somewhere safe and quiet, or prepare a relaxed environment for the birthing. Mammals usually give birth in the dark. As they near birthing, mammals appear very relaxed and calm. Mammals appear to be without pain during the process. Even though we know that animals feel pain in other situations, during the birth they usually remain quiet and calm. As far as we can tell, a mammal does not question what will happen to her during birth. She does not know about the physiological process. She has not watched “Discovery Health” or “One Born Every Minute.” She simply accepts what happens to her, does not fight it, and lets her body get on with it. She trusts her body and her instincts. Mammals Influence Their Own Birth In essence, a mammal will not give birth if she feels that she is in danger, threatened, observed or disturbed. Somehow, a powerful response in her body kicks in to enable her to stop or substantially slow down the labour until she can get somewhere safe and allow the birthing to continue. This is an example of what is known as the “fight or...
