This volume describes organ builder Walter Chinaglia‘s ongoing project to construct an Italian Renaissance organo di legno (organ with wooden pipes), modelled after an instrument at the Hofkirche in Innsbruck. The author creatively combines the use of historical tools and materials, simple geometry and practical rules to reinterpret the original artifact and recover the modus operandi of the anonymous Renaissance builder. Chinaglia‘s unique approach to pipe construction, based simultaneously on acoustics and historical research, liberates the wooden pipe from conventional voicing practices, resulting in a historical timbre that sounds surprisingly fresh to modern ears.

Numerous images of the construction invite the reader to discover the construction of a historically informed organ and illustrate the traditional woodworking techniques used for components: windchest, keyboard, pipes and the mechanism.

Chinaglia, Walter
After obtaining his degree in Physics in 1996 and completing five years of research in nonlinear optics at the University of Insubria, Como, Walter Chinaglia opened his workshop Organa in 2001. He is internationally renowned for building historically informed pipe organs and harpsichords, using traditional materials and historical techniques. He is official luthier of the International Course on Medieval Music Performance in Besalú, Spain, and affiliated to the Centre for Cultural Heritage Studies, University of Insubria, Como. In 2018 he was research fellow at the Deutsches Museum within the research group Materiality of Musical Instruments.
