Furious economic growth and social change resulted in pervasive civic conflict in Imperial Germany. Roger Chickering presents a wide-ranging history of this fractious period, from German national unification to the close of the First World War. Roger Chickering is Professor Emeritus of History at Georgetown University. His publications include The Great War and Urban Life in Germany: Freiburg, 1914–1918 (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Imperial Germany and the Great War, 1914–1918 (Cambridge University Press, 3rd ed., 2014).
