[Frederick the Wise. Imperial prince and Sovereign at a Turning Point in History]
Frederick the Wise (1463–1525) is still one of the most famous rulers of the time period around 1500 for a variety of reasons: his great reputation with the emperor and imperial princes, his role as a patron of the arts, the expansion of his residence in Wittenberg and the founding of the university there (1502), but not least his work as Martin Luther's patron in the early days of the Reformation. His long reign (1486–1525) connects the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era, marking a turning point that can be traced at various levels of political, social, economic, and cultural life.
This anthology focuses on the Saxon elector in the empire and in Europe, Frederick the Wise as sovereign and aspects of representation, art and piety associated with the electoral court. The 19 contributions offer new research findings and paint a multifaceted picture of the person and reign of Frederick the Wise, whose influence extended far beyond Electoral Saxony.
