This book is a study of contemporary cross-border activity in Japanese universities, employing ‘Asia’ as the cornerstone of inquiry. It uses qualitative, case-based analysis of Asia-oriented outbound and inbound student mobility projects to explore how ideas of Asia as an axis of identity and knowledge are articulated in policy, construed by practitioners and rendered visible through institutional practice. Analysis of the contemporary dynamics of international engagement in Japanese universities is framed by critical evaluation of discourses and policies concerning Japan’s positioning in an era marked by the economic rise of Asia: the so-called ‘Asian Century’. The book thus employs the well-worn theme of university internationalisation as a lens through which to explore some of the fundamental changes currently underway in Japanese society. Furthermore, by shedding light on transnational convergence in international education policy addressing the challenge of an ‘Asian Century’, the book offers a new empirically-driven understanding of the interactive processes and products of institutional partnerships in the global higher education sector.
