An introduction to the emerging field of quantum optomechanics, this comprehensive book combines optical and microwave implementations with an emphasis on experimental practice and theoretical approaches and methods. In the 21st century, many advances in both theory and experimentation demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of quantum optomechanics where nanoscience, engineering, metrology, condensed matter, and quantum physics interrelate. The book provides a coherent framework within which to describe and model optomechanical systems and their interactions with other quantum systems.

W. P. Bowen obtained a PhD in experimental physics from the Australian National University in 2004 for work on optical squeezing and entanglement and quantum information processing. Currently he leads an experimental research group at the University of Queensland, Australia, focused on quantum optics, photonic and optomechanical sensing, and quantum optomechanics. He is the Opto- and Nanomechanics Program Manager of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems.

G. J. Milburn obtained a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Waikato in 1982 for work on squeezed states of light and quantum nondemolition measurements. Currently he is Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and The American Physical Society. He has worked in the fields of quantum optics, quantum measurement and stochastic processes, atom optics, quantum chaos, mesoscopic electronics, quantum information and quantum computation, and, more recently, optomechanics and superconducting quantum circuits. Dr. Milburn is the author of four books including two technical books, Quantum Optics (with Dan Walls, Springer) and Quantum Measurement and Control (with H. Wiseman, Cambridge); and two nontechnical books, Schrödinger’s Machines and The Feynman Processor.
