Bis heute gehört Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) mit seinem Frühwerk ›Allgemeine Psychopathologie‹ zu den methodischen Klassikern der Psychiatrie. Mit ›Strindberg und van Gogh‹ legte er pathographische Fallstudien vor, die auf dem Weg von der Psychiatrie zur Philosophie den Zusammenhang von Kunst und Krankheit in den Blick nahmen. In Überlegungen zu Friedrich Hölderlin klang hier schon die Frage an, die später in den Pathographien zu Friedrich Nietzsche und Max Weber stärker noch zum Tragen kam: Wie können Krankheit und Erkenntnis positiv verknüpft sein? Die ideengeschichtlichen Essays von Matthias Bormuth zeigen, wie Jaspers unter den Bedingungen psychischer Krankheit die besondere Freiheit schöpferischen Schaffens betonte. Sie begreifen seine Ansichten gerade in kritischem Kontrast zu Max Webers Diagnose der Moderne, der weit über Jaspers hinaus ging, und geben mit Dieter Henrich Hinweise, worin die produktive 'Grenzerfahrung' solch ärztlichen Philosophierens liegt. Pathographie als Kulturwissenschaft hat im 21. Jahrhundert noch nichts von ihrer Aktualität eingebüßt.
Karl Jasper’s (1883–1969) early work ›General Psychopathology‹ is still regarded as one of the classic methodological works on psychiatry today. A philosopher as well, he often expressed his polemic views of clinical psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics within the context of Kant’s idea of freedom. The monograph consolidates the controversies and their current relevance. In addition, studies of the pathographies of Hölderlin, Nietzsche and van Gogh explain how Jaspers emphasized the importance of freedom, particularly during the creative process, for those with a mental illness. The sociological modernity of Jasper’s cross-cultural thinking is reflected in the works at the end of the book which are directed at Max Weber, his teacher. This volume demonstrates that Jasper’s philosophy has lost none of its relevance in the 21st century.
