Concepts of space permeate not only scientific discourses and research initiatives but are a central element within the humanities as well. They determine the fundamental orientation of individual disciplines which study geographic, religious, territorial, literary, and social spaces. Such concepts are bound to specific socio-historical conditions and are, consequently, reflected in the production of various types of maps as well as in literary and biblical texts. By preserving and transforming knowledge, culturally generated spaces – from antiquity to modernity - have provided the point of departure for the establishment of various forms of social identity. The essays collected in this interdisciplinary study represent a range of approaches to research on “space” in a number of different academic disciplines. They consider the underlying concepts of space that inform each of the historical themes with which they are concerned in order to demonstrate how an awareness of taxonomies of spatial orientation provides the framework for new interpretations.>
