'Tell me honestly, did you dig this watch out of my drawer with the intention of stealing it?' Mr. Marston asked in a cold, clipped tone.
Marie's voice was brittle when she answered. 'Yes, Mr. Marston.'
Mr. Marston took a deep breath and Marie thought that he was going to yell at her, but his voice stayed calm and cold. 'I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I am. You do realise that by what you did, or rather attempted to do, you have not only betrayed me, but broken the law? I ought to report you to the authorities.'
She had known that, of course she had, but she had never thought she would get caught.
'What do you have to say for yourself?'
'Mr. Marston, I - You see, my family fell on some hard times and I'm just trying to help in any way that I can. I'm sorry, I know I did wrong, please don't report me!'
Mr. Marston hummed. 'That does not excuse your actions. But I am willing to offer an alternative solution. I will not report you to the authorities and you will be able to keep your position in my household, if you accept my punishment: I am hosting a few gentlemen tonight and you will be our entertainment.'
Marie did not quite understand. She did not sing or play an instrument, how could she provide entertainment? 'E-entertainment, sir?' she asked.
'Of the... Carnal kind.'
