This book is the fruition of five years’ work in exploring the idea of superdiversity. The editors argue that sociolinguistic superdiversity could be a source of inspiration to a wide range of post-structuralist, post-colonial and neo-Marxist interdisciplinary research into the potential and the limits of human cultural creativity and societal renewal under conditions of increasing and complexifying global connectivity. Through case studies of language practices in spaces understood as inherently translocal and multi-layered (classrooms and schools, youth spaces, mercantile spaces and nation-states), this book explores the relevance of superdiversity for the social and human sciences and positions it as a research perspective in sociolinguistics and beyond.

Spotti, Massimiliano
Massimiliano Spotti is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. Further, within the same institution, he is also Deputy Director of Babylon - Centre for the Study of Superdiversity.  For a number of years, his ethnographic discourse-analytical work has focused on the topic of identity construction within learning environments characterized by the presence of ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. Currently, his research line focuses on investigating the online-offline nexus and the implications this has for institutional encounters in asylum seeking procedures in both The Netherlands and Flanders.

Karrebæk, Martha Sif
Martha Sif Karrebæk, Associate Professor at University of Copenhagen, has worked with a broad range of topics in the field of multilingualism. Her PhD focused on peer group socialization and second language acquisition in pre-school, using Construction Grammar and Language Socialization. She subsequently studied how children become socialized into the role of students in a school with a student population characterized by diversity. She continued to focus on the use and non-use of different linguistic registers in the first grades. Karrebæk has led a project on Mother Tongue Education in Copenhagen, and is now starting a project on interpreting in the public sector in Denmark. Karrebæk is also well-known for her work on the intersections between food and language, and she has published on the intersection between (in)security and language.

Karel Arnaut is Associate Professor and Research Coordinator at the Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities Research Centre (IMMRC), Leuven University, Belgium.

Blommaert, Jan
Jan Blommaert is Professor of Language, Culture and Globalization at Tilburg University (The Netherlands) and is also affiliated to Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of the Western Cape (South Africa). He is the Director of the Babylon Research Center at Tilburg University.
