In the year 2000, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) adopted the concept “prophetic dialogue” to express its identity and mission in the contemporary world; a pluralist world on the religious and cultural levels, and also a fragmented world, where poverty and social exclusion never cease to grow. The concept of prophetic dialogue arose equally as an answer to the new internal configuration of the Society, now composed of missionaries mostly from Asia and Africa and belonging to a vast complex of cultures and ethnicities. At the same time, the SVD identified four priority partners in prophetic dialogue: faith-seekers, the poor and marginalized, people of other cultures and members of other religious traditions. This book traces the origin of this new concept and its importance in mission theology today.
