In this sequel to his bestselling autobiography Pride and Perjury, Jonathan Aitken tells the story of his prison sentence and his re-entry into the world of freedom. The book opens with the author's dramatic sentencing at The Old Bailey and his frightening experiences as a new prisoner in HMP Belmarsh. Amidst scenes alternating between high comedy and dark menace, Aitken describes how he learned to cope in his strange new environment, gradually building good relationships with fellow inmates. As his prison journey moves on through HMP's Standford Hill and Elmley, Aitken's colourful narrative takes the reader through many eye-witness episodes such as the 'jugging' of a sex offender; various assaults and punch-ups; visits by famous friends such as Lord Longford and Michael Howard; an hilarious prison break-in by a photographer disguised as a prisoner; the formation of a prison prayer group; and the notorious tabloid-financed 'Aitken drugs plot'.
Some of the book's most poignant chapters describe Aitken's post-release depression followed by the spiritual and practical rebuilding of his life which led him through two years of theology at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford to a joyful re-marriage and a new career as an author, broadcaster and public speaker.
