In modern organizations, collaboration between the so-called knowledge workers is actively encouraged. Management gurus urge that when people work together collaboratively, their joint creative output is potentially greater than the sum of their individual contributions. In other words, proving the common refrain that the sum is greater than the parts. The open plan offices seen in the Silicon Valley bear testament to this advice. The accepted wisdom is that for innovation and creativity to prosper, sharing ideas among each other provide a potent mix. Into this mix, bring in the fast-developing communication and collaboration tools enabled by the rapid advances in technology, and further spurred by the disruptions in traditional ways of doing business—as can be seen because of the current worldwide pandemic, then we have the perfect recipe for adopting technology enabled collaborative work. Social distancing norms and remote working were imposed to protect the workforce. However, social distancing in the physical space was accompanied with reduced e-distancing, so to speak. It is quite plausible to argue that the induced physical separation was only practically attainable because most of the work could be accomplished by bridging the physical distancing by electronic means and perhaps done with more efficiency and fewer distractions. The term e-collaboration captures this rapidly maturing phenomenon. This book serves as a timely contribution to the emerging literature of an idea whose time has certainly arrived.

This book focuses on emerging technologies and systems for e-collaboration in virtual environments, including e-collaboration technologies' situation and solutions, innovation systems, competition and strategies, governance and relegation, marketing and growth capabilities, public policies, etc. The book presents a fully understanding on emerging technologies and systems for e-collaboration in organizations and society and provides insight for how to develop technologies and systems for e-collaboration in virtual environments in particular, during a global pandemic.
