The main aims of this study were the description, explanation, and assessment of structure and change of settlement areas in the Havelland and Northern Zauche districts in the Early, Middle, and Late Slavic Period on the basis of a catalogue of 1.045 find spots. The starting point were the multi-phased settlements of Berlin-Klosterfelde 13/22/32 [“Spandauer Burgwall”, 8th-13th century] und Brandenburg-Neustadt 11 [7th-12th century]. Their stratified pottery allowed the description of three chronological phases to which most sites can be attributed. By means of dendrodates and coins the chronology was made even more precise, although this led to overlaps in the find material. Our knowledge of settlement areas has been stable since the 1990s and new ones are not to be expected. Occupation started with agrarian settlements of the 7th century that were joined by specialised settlements and fortified sites in the younger Early Slavic Period. In Middle Slavic times linear internal colonisation occurred along water courses including many concentration processes. The Late Slavic Period saw full-areal expansion of settlement and only Klosterfelde, Neustadt, and Nauen 59 continued as seats of power.
