Chapter 2. Relationship between Man and Environment
2-1 Principles of the Five Elements 2-1-1 Yin Yang In order to distinguish the changes of all things, we must first observe the world from two p*erspectives, such as: up and down, left and right, east and west, good or bad, light and heavy, easy and difficult, men and women. Everything is a relative concept. From a real perspective, there are no such concepts. For example: The three letters ABC are standing side by side of each other. Would you say that B is on the left or on the right of each of the other two letters? When we observe from the viewpoint of A, then B is on the right. When we observe from the viewpoint of C, then B is on the left. So, is B on the left or on the right? In fact, B is there, neither left nor right. But after you have an angle of observation, left and right appear. We need to distinguish all that exists in this world, and yin and yang is the most fundamental binary distinction. It is just like the computer language that is made of 0 and 1, which has evolved into such a colourful world of internet information. To put it more simply, yin and yang are about relationships! For example, the relationship between man and the environment, the relationship between mind and body, and the relationship between energy and information, etc. 2-1-2 The Five Elements The entire universe is composed of energy and information, and the combination of energy and information has resulted in such a colourful world. So how do they combine themselves together? In this concept, the term for information is Yin and for energy is Yang. The intertwining of Yin and Yang produces five combined states, which are otherwise known as the five elements of: Solar state: Fire Lunar state: Water Yin and Yang state: Wood Yang decline and Yin growth state: Metal Balance of Yin and Yang: Earth Human organs corresponding to the five elements These are the five elements. They are not five substances, but five states or conditions produced by the mutual influence of energy and information. In order to make it easier for people to understand these five states, the ancient Chinese used "metal, wood, water, fire and earth" to refer to them. Matter in the universe is composed of energy and information, and everything has the properties of the five elements. Because each state has a certain frequency, those items with the same frequency or similar frequencies have the same five-element attribute. Two examples are as follows: The state of wood corresponds to the east of the five directions, the liver from the five internal organs, the eyes from the five senses, anger from the five emotions, sourness from the five flavours, blue from the five colours, the soul from the five spiritual fields, the feather from the five sounds. The state of fire corresponds to the south from the five directions, the heart from the five internal organs, the tongue from the five senses, joy from the five emotions, bitterness from the five flavours, red from the five colours, the gods from the five spiritual fields, and the horns from the five sounds. Although these concepts belong to different fields, in terms of the five elements as well as in terms of the combined state of energy and information, they have some properties in common, that is, the same frequency of fluctuations. The state of each of the five elements when combined into a relationship with another state of the five elements has an inevitable mutual influence on each other, for example: The effect of wood on wood: support The effect of wood on gold: consume The effect of wood on fire: nourish The effect of wood on soil: control The effect of wood on water: reduce With such combinations, we find that there are not just the two commonly thought of relationships of nourish and control, but five relationships between the five elements: which are support, consume, nourish, control, and reduce. These five relationships themselves have the attributes of the five elements, so everything and every matter are unavoidably composed out of the five elements. 2-2 Application of the Five Elements With an understanding that the five elements are the five states of interaction between energy and information, many matters that were previously seemingly mysterious are now no longer puzzling, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, facial features, Feng Shui, etc. 2-2-1 Traditional Chinese Medicine Traditional Chinese Medicine aims to achieve balance and equilibrium in a body, and its basic theory is based on the five elements of yin and yang. In connection with the human body, the body is energy and the spirit is information. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the human body has two circulatory systems, one is the body and the other is the spirit, which influence and interact with each other. Since the changing state of energy and information is divided into five states of five elements, everything has the attributes of five elements, including various human organs, emotions and everything in the outside world. Let me list the corresponding information related to the five elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine: the five elements, the five internal organs, the five emotions, the five directions, the five colours, and the five sounds: 5 Elements metal wood water fire earth 5 Internal organs lung liver kidney heart spleen 5 Emotions sadness anger fear happiness worry 5 Directions west east north south center 5 Flavours spicy sour salty bitter sweet 5 Colours white green black red yellow 5 Gods spirit soul essence deity desire 5 Sounds (Notes) shang jué yu zhi gong 5 Senses nose eyes ears tongue mouth According to Chinese medicine, when the properties of any five elements are similar, they will have similar vibration frequencies and affect each other. For example: Anger corresponds to the liver: Once a person is angry, his Qi and blood will quickly accumulate in the liver. Over time, it will cause damage to the liver, and it becomes easier to develop liver disease. At the same time, the corresponding human sense of the eyes will become dry. The correspondence between sadness and lungs: When a person is extremely sad, his Qi and blood will quickly accumulate in the lungs, and at the same time, due to the corresponding human sense of smell, he will be prone to having a runny nose. If his sadness is goes on for too long, it will cause damage to the lungs and lead to lung diseases. As long as a person’s yin, yang and the five elements are in balance, the person will feel very comfortable; otherwise they will get sick easily. With knowledge of this principle, we can realise that: Changing one’s environment can cure an illness. Changing one’s taste can cure an illness. Changing one’s mood can cure an illness. Listening to sounds and practicing tones can cure an illness. Exercising the body can cure an illness. Therefore, in the viewpoint of Chinese medicine, everything can be a medicine, and the key is when it can be used as a medicine or not. This is the magic of Chinese medicine. For example, a client told me that the growth and development of his son's kidney had occurred relatively later than usual, and the doctors could not do anything about it. After I learned about it, I found that the child had been very timid since he was a child, and I know that timidity is due to insufficient kidney Qi. Also there was once, in order to make his son exercise courage, he forced him to light a loud firecracker, but the child was frightened and his health became worse. Although I am not a Chinese medicine practitioner, I understand the principle behind this. So I gave him a simple method of treatment, and the result was very effective. What was this method? Let your child learn to play the drums! The reason for this is because, among the five elements, the kidney belongs to water. And as the sound of drums belongs to water and water can produce wood, therefore the sound of drums can strengthen the kidneys and increase courage! During battles in ancient times, drums were always beaten on sending out the troops, while metal cymbals or bells were hit to withdraw the troops. The sound of beating drums can boost the momentum, and the sound of ringing metal can depress the momentum. This can be evidently seen nowadays, by observing how young people are filled with a growing sense of enthusiasm when they hear the strong bass drum sound while they are approaching a discotheque. The same principle can be witnessed here. Therefore playing on and listening to the drums was helpful to the boy, and at the same time when he takes the initiative to drum, this...
