Born in Boise, Idaho, in the middle of the last century, Louise Wagenknecht was raised near the Klamath River in northwestern California. She graduated from California State University at Chico in 1972 with a degree in English, and later studied range, botany, forestry, and wildlife management at California State University at Humboldt. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service for more than thirty years. In the 1990s her essays on Western issues began appearing in regional publications and anthologies. She is the author of two previous memoirs, White Poplar, Black Locust and Light on the Devils. She lives in Idaho.
