SAR systems are today an indispensable data source for high-resolution 2D and 3D mapping, environmental and disaster monitoring as well as security related applications. Over the years, the number of SAR missions has increased significantly and there are currently more than 50 operational SAR satellites in orbit. Current SAR missions are operational and, in addition to their scientific exploitation, SAR data and products have gained a considerable share of the commercial EO markets. SAR techniques and information extraction have matured in various domains, enabling operational applications and services, like for example in the European Copernicus programme.
