The fact that women are under-represented in science and research has been discussed for quite some time now. Although half of all students in the European Union are women, with every rung up the career ladder, the number of female scientists and scholars decreases. However, the current discourse on procedures of assessing scientific excellence has pointed out a number of new aspects. Studies on the implementation of common methods and criteria for measuring and evaluating excellence have shown that these methods and criteria are not always gender neutral. In this volume, experts from a number of different research institutions in Austria give their views on this topic. Examined are, from various perspectives, the consequences of implementing excellence and quality paradigms into the culture of research, the choice of evaluation procedures being implemented, as well as the extent of discrimination against female scientists and scholars.
