[Evil – Shame – Sacrifice. Three Core Religious Phenomena from a Philosophical-Theological Perspective]
Religions promise and offer redemption; therefore all, yet also only those who have and perceive in themselves a desire for redemption can rightly be considered religious. Three obstacles stand in the way, however, when it comes to believing the redemptive message of any given religion: first, the challenge of (experiencing) evil; second, shame and guilt as purported preconditions for and trajectories to religion; third, the idea of sacrifice as a prerequisite and necessary medium for generating and motivating any redemptive willingness on the part of the deity. The present volume contains six articles – proceedings of the Paul-Tillich-Lectures held at Evangelische Akademie Frankfurt between 2020 and 2022; they discuss the three challenges just mentioned from the perspective of philosophy and theology, respectively.
