Young people are a popular topic for public debate, while the voices of young people themselves seldom are heard. This text suggests a change in perspective: the focus is on the young research participants’ social analysis. To read young people as co-producers of society means to question common notions of belonging. The contributions by German and Canadian young people – from individual interviews, group discussions, pictures and photos – create a differentiated image of national and ethnicized belonging, gender and norms. Obvious are the still significant limitations of gender norms and the influence of national policies on understandings of belonging. It is the task of manycultural societies to value young peoples’ competences to negotiate difference and to offer a sociopolitical framework in which diversity is livable.>

Hoerder, Dirk
Dr. Dirk Hoerder teaches North-American social history and migration history at Bremen University, and has directed several internationally cooperative and comparative research projects on migration and acculturation.
