This book introduces several principles and the knowledge needed for the audience to understand science at the nanoscale. Unlike other books on the market, this book has an expanded scope in order to reach a wider audience interest in drug nanodelivery topics. The book compiles in great depth current research and recent advances in drug delivery, providing a wide coverage of applications in the nanomedicine field and contributing to improvement of the knowledge of researchers and students. It offers numerous interesting and well-illustrated examples from cancer to infectious diseases, passing through tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other important disorders.

The book is an interdisciplinary way of presenting new strategies on drug delivery. It covers a wide range of topics on nanotechnology applied to the diagnosis and treatment of several pathologies and diseases. The ultimate goal is to review the most recent research and developments in the nanotechnology field, exploiting several administration routes, internalization pathways, site-specific delivery strategies, and potential

Ana Rute Neves (ARN) obtained her master’s degree in biochemistry (theoretical chemistry and computational biochemistry) in 2009 and PhD in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry in 2015 from the University of Porto, Portugal. She is a postdoc researcher at the Molecular Biophysics and Biotechnology Unit of the UCIBIO, REQUIMTE research center, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto. Her research focuses on biophysical and biochemical approaches to study the interaction of phytochemicals with biomembranes (using liposomes as biomimetic systems) in order to explain their therapeutic properties, and the development of nanopharmaceuticals (lipid nanoparticles) as drug delivery systems to create new and more efficient therapies for a range of diseases and administration routes. ARN is the author of several peer-reviewed publications in international journals with two highly cited papers, according to the Essential Science Indicators - Thomson Reuters. She is also the author of a paper in a science dissemination journal, one conference proceeding, one submitted patent, and four invited book chapters and is the editor of one book series. She has given several invited talks, 35 oral presentations, and 18 poster communications in both national and international conferences. Furthermore, ARN has been invited for several invited course lectures at graduation and postgraduation courses and has been also responsible for the co-supervision of several PhD, MSc, and research training students and foreigners on the ERASMUS Mundus Programme. She has also participated in several financed research projects as a member of the team. Currently, ARN is an executive researcher of two ongoing funded R&D projects (FCT and Norte2020).

Salette Reis (SR) obtained her PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1995 from the University of Porto. She is associate professor and director of the Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto. She is also the group leader of the Molecular Biophysics and Biotechnology Unit at REQUIMTE. Her investigation has been focused on biophysics and pharmaceutical chemistry, namely in the use of biomimetic membrane models to study the effect of drugs on biological membranes, trying to establish a relationship between this effect and their activity/mechanism of action, and the development of nanocarrier systems for drug delivery to overcome the disadvantages of classical therapies. SR is also involved in the study of the role of membrane biophysical properties on membrane peroxidation and on the mechanism of action of antioxidants. SR is the author of almost 200 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and several book chapters and is the editor of one book series. She has given several invited talks, oral presentations, and poster communications in both national and international conferences. She has also been a consultant for national and international funding agencies. SR is involved in the supervision of several undergraduate, master, and PhD students and postdocs, as well as research training students and foreigners, on the ERASMUS Mundus Programme. She has also participated in several funded R&D projects as principal investigator and also as an executive member of the team.
