Thanks to the work of Kanzleirat Gerhard Anton von Halem in his function as a correpondent, a writer, a reviewer, an editor and the leading head of the "Literary Society", the little ducal seat of Oldenburg became a centre of bourgeois thinking and gained importance far beyond the North of Germany in the tense days at the turn of the 18th century.Along with the self-enlightenment in the Age of Enlightenment, his communicative activities promoted the linking-up of the intellectuals who like him were looking for a new political and social identity and trying to find answers to the questions on what constituted the state and brought about its lasting unity. With the publication of his reports on Paris during the Revolution Halem earned an outstanding reputation. Based on handwritten source material, the dissertation treats of the development and passing on of Halem´s philosophy of life and the role he had adopted while developing modern forms of public life.>
