This book is an intervention in the field of dissenting writings by women political detainees in India in the 1970s, and it straddles three interlinked areas: politics, prison and writing. Primarily focusing on writings arising out of Bengal's Naxalite movement (1967–1975) and from the pan-Indian period of Emergency (1975–1977), the study traces women's political participation in revolutionary movements and dissident politics and attends to their experiences of torture and incarceration. The varied histories of the 'long seventies' of the global south are central to the present work's exploration of the process of radicalization of women political participants under detention. It offers a materialist and political interpretation of dissenting writings and recovers a story of women's political participation by dwelling on women's transformation from being marginal political participants to becoming resistant writers under detention. It demonstrates how and why detention played a very important role in radicalizing bourgeois women participants and it excavates an expanded historical terrain for evaluation.
