Under Pruitt’s visionary leadership, Thomas Edison emerged as a pioneer in distance education, prior learning assessment, and access to higher education for working adults and the military. In the midst of one of the most challenging political environments in the nation, this unique institution’s commitment to innovation and quality has left its indelible mark on the landscape of higher education.
 
From his days as a student protester in high school and college to his appearances on Capitol Hill, George Pruitt earned the reputation as a candid, knowledgeable, and influential leader in higher education. He is the recipient of numerous awards, honors and commendations, including six honorary degrees, and has consulted widely in higher education, business, and government. His stewardship and service attracted the attention of three presidents of the United States of both parties who appointed him to serve in an advisory capacity to five secretaries of education. Pruitt’s tenacious spirit and commitment to justice serves as a reminder to always try to leave things better than you found them.

George A. Pruitt is President Emeritus of Thomas Edison State University. Pruitt served as the president of Thomas Edison State University from 1982 to 2018. He is a former director of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, American Council on Education, Choose New Jersey, Inc., Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Greater Trenton, Inc., New Jersey State Planning Commission, Mercer Medical Center, Millennium Leadership Initiative, Sun National Bank, The Trenton Savings Bank, Rider University, and former advisor, Kellogg National Fellowship Program, W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
 
Melissa A. Maszczak serves as Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Leadership and Governance at Thomas Edison State University. She also serves as a member of the board of the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education.
