The European Middle Ages already discussed the question of the relative influence of birth disposition versus environmental influences on a person’s behaviour and abilities – and came to very different results. Literature as a textual world of second order provides a space for negotiation in which different imaginations of educability can be explored and evaluated. Middle High German poetry uses this possibility of narrating education to a surprisingly high degree. In order to trace different models of intergenerational transfer in the texts, the study regards education as an essential factor in the continuity of human culture and defines it as a phenomenon that can be grasped both transhistorically and historically. In this way, three configurations in the texts are identified and analysed that prove to be key models of knowledge transfer between the generations.
