Als die Mitarbeiter*innen der Archäologischen Denkmalpflege des Landkreises Cuxhaven in den 1990er-Jahren an der Wurt Fallward einen Bestattungsplatz der späten Römischen Kaiserzeit bis Völkerwanderungszeit entdeckten, ahnten diese nicht, auf welch einzigartige Funde sie im Marschboden stoßen würden: nämlich Särge mit den sterblichen Überresten der in ihrer Kleidung und mit Schmuck bestatteten Menschen und zahllose, beinahe vollkommen unversehrte Beigaben aus Holz. Gräber und Funde gewähren heute einen beispiellosen Einblick in das Leben und Sterben unserer Vorfahren aus den hiesigen Nordseemarschen vor mehr als 1.600 Jahren. Die Fotos in diesem Buch beleuchten in besonderer Weise noch deutlich sichtbare Herstellungs- und zahllose Gebrauchsspuren sowie kunstvolle Verzierungen der Beigaben.
When employees of the heritage management service for the district of Cuxhaven discovered a Late Roman to Migration Period cemetery near the wurt Fallward in the 1990s, they could not have known how exceptional the finds from the marshy ground would be: coffins with the remains of people buried in their clothing and jewellery and countless wooden grave goods which were almost entirely undamaged. Today, these burials and finds provide unparalleled insights into the lives and death of our ancestors living in the local North Sea marshes more than 1600 years ago. The photographs in this volume particularly illustrate the clearly visible production marks and the numerous use wear traces, as well as the elaborate decoration of the grave goods.
