Today, church politics in Württemberg are characterized by the presence of informal groups within the Church’s General Assembly ('Landessynode'), which act mostly like political parties but are not formally recognized as part of the political system. Three of the present four groups have existed for more than 40 years. They represent respectively the liberal-progressive and the conservative-evangelical position and a middle position. The last one, 'Evangelium und Kirche' has its roots in the struggle of the Confessing Church and was founded in 1934. The conservative group, 'Lebendige Gemeinde' evolved out of the protest of evangelical Christians against the theology of Rudolf Bultmann and his successors and dates back to 1952. The progressive group, ‘Offene Kirche’, was established to fight against those presumably fundamentalist notions and help the Church to find its new role in the (post-)modern World. Through massive conflicts in 1968/69, all three groups underwent a formative phase and shaped the further way of the Protestant Church in Germany’s southwest.
