Processual acts and rituals are important for the understanding of cultures, a fact which is taken into account in the present interdisciplinary publication. An introductory article on the concept of rituals and the interpretation of relevant archaeological evidence is followed by examples for ritual acts: burial rituals in the Ancient Near East, the offering ritual in New Kingdom Egypt, the change of the Egyptian ritual of the white bull, Egyptian rituals for a "dangerous goddess", the Egyptian ritual in the Iseum Campense in Rome, post-mortal and post-funeral rites of the Catacomb Culture, the post-glacial use of caves, the structure of Late Bronze Age metal vessel hoards as well as the burial rites of Ancient Greece. Other contributions are dealing with Phoenician-Punic foundation deposits, East Greek sanctuaries of Demeter, marriage sacrifices and citizenship in Athens, the persistence and re-interpretation of pagan rituals in Late Antiquity, the distinction between ritual law and moral law in the antique Jewish-Christian controversy, the transmission of power in Brazilian Candomblé rituals as well as new perspectives of research on rituals.
