Presenting further results of the interdisciplinary research project “Reconstruction of the environment and subsistence at the Habur in the Late Holocene” this volume starts with five contributions on the actual state of the regional environment: geology (W. Schöler), pedology (U. Smettan), mammalian fauna (D. Kock), fish fauna (F. Krupp/W. Schneider), and amphibians and reptiles (H. Martens). On the basis of excavated remains four contributions discuss matters of former environmental conditions and subsistence means. An extensive study is devoted to animal bones (C. Becker). W. van Zeist comments of plant cultivation at Tell Sheikh Hamad and Tell Bderi. H. Kürschner discusses the significance of charcoal remains for the environmental reconstruction. H. Schutkowski comments on patterns of subsistence as revealed by human skeletons. Three further contributions discuss means of food storage at Tell Bderi (P. Pfälzner), canals in the Neo-Assyrian rural landscape (M. Fales), and settlement development and population structure in the Lower Habur region during the Neo-Assyrian period (D. Morandi Bonacossi). Contrasting its harmful effects with the increased livability and economic security the closing contribution evaluates the political-historical significance of the anthropogenic intervention (H. Kühne).
