This volume presents two of the most extensive Later Neolithic complexes of Westphalia. The Soest ditch system of the Michelsberg Culture was sectioned during city excavations and is 35-40 ha large. It consists of at least five parallel cross ridge ditches, the largest two of which were overlapping. The older, smaller one was nearly devoid of finds, the younger one was some 8 m wide and rich in pottery and flint [phase MK IIIb, 39th century B.C.]. The ditch system at Nottuln comprises a U-shaped ditch, 8 m wide and at least 250 m long, with 2 parallel palisade trenches, nearby pits and surface finds. It was filled with Michelsberg pottery and stone implements [MK IIIb] in the lower / middle layers and finds of the late TBK western group in the upper ones. A single-aisled post house of 6m length, the first Later Neolithic post structure ever found in Westphalia yet, was oriented towards one palisade trench. Additionally, there was find material of the early Later Neolithic Bischheim Group. Finally, Later Neolithic Westphalia is discussed as an entity and with regard to its surroundings. A western Westphalian subgroup of the north-western Michelsberg zone was recognizable.
