This book is intended as a contribution to an opening of Mediterranean studies towards literary studies. It assumes that the Mediterranean is not a fixed entity, but is constantly being redefined in an ongoing process of semantic demarcation. The national and imperial endeavours to establish identity that are undertaken in French and Italian literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries play an important role here. The focus is on three genres – the travelogue, in which a survey is carried out via specific routes, the utopia, in which the Mediterranean is outlined as a temporally dynamised ideal projection space, and the historical novel and film, in which the Mediterranean is captured in a confrontation with its past historicity. Through these comparatively interlinked textual constellations, the author makes visible dynamics that have hitherto been ignored in literary Mediterranean studies.
