Erzählungen von Grenzüberschreitungen sind in Literatur und Film nicht selten. Sie sind aber geradezu unvermeidbar, wenn es um Mission geht. Das gilt sowohl für Literatur und Filme, die Mission in einem engeren Sinn verstehen, wie es etwa in »End of the Spear« von Jim Hanon, Abdulrazak Gurnahs »Nachleben« oder in dokumentarischen »Missionsfilmen« verschiedener Missionsgesellschaften der Fall ist. Grenzüberschreitungen sind aber auch zentral in Büchern und Filmen, die ein eher weites Verständnis von Mission konstruieren wie etwa »Dune« von Frank Herbert bzw. David Lynch oder Denis Villeneuve oder »Karte und Gebiet« von Michel Houellebecq.
Die Beiträge analysieren eine Fülle literarischer und filmischer Beispiele, in denen Mission implizit oder explizit thematisch wird. Aus verschiedenen Disziplinen werden hegemoniale Dynamiken der Grenzziehungen und Identitätsbestimmungen, aber auch Ambivalenzen in der Begegnung mit »dem anderen« aufgezeigt. Zugleich wird nach dem Erkenntnisgewinn dieser Filme und Romane für die gegenwärtige Missionstheologie gefragt.
[Mission in Film and Literature. Vol. 2: Crossing Borders: Plots – Actors – Contexts]
Narratives of crossing borders are not uncommon in literature and film. But they are quite nearly unavoidable when missions are at stake. This is true for literature and films that understand mission in a narrower sense, as is the case in Jim Hanon’s »End of the Spear«, Abdulrazak Gurnah’s »Afterlives« or in documentary »mission films« by various mission societies. However, crossing borders is also central in books and films that develop a rather broad understanding of mission, such as »Dune« by Frank Herbert (including the version by David Lynch or Denis Villeneuve), or »The Map and the Territory« by Michel Houellebecq.
The contributions to the volume analyze a wealth of literary and cinematic examples in which mission appears as a theme either implicitly or explicitly. Hegemonic dynamics of demarcating borders and determining identities, but also ambivalences in the encounter with »the other« are highlighted from various disciplines. At the same time, the contributions inquire into the knowledge gained from these films and novels for contemporary mission theology.
