2. Spooky Legends
“So why exactly do we have to pick up this key now?” Peter asks the First Investigator. The Three Investigators get out of Bob’s Beetle. They had picked up the old woman’s address from Mary-Ann right after the filming session. The woman lives in a residential complex in West Hollywood. “You don’t really think this is another case for the Three Investigators, do you?” asks Bob curiously. Justus smiles knowingly and rings the doorbell. A few moments later, the door opens. They are greeted by a cheerful, elderly lady on the third floor. “Hello Mrs Sciutto!” says Justus politely. “How can I help you kids?” “We’re from the film group at Rocky Beach High School,” explains Peter. “It’s about your house.” “Ah, I see – the film group. Sure, please come inside! I’ve just finished making a pot of iced tea. I’m sure you’re all thirsty in this heat.” “Thank you, ma’am.” Justus shakes her hand and introduces himself and his two friends. “So, tell me what you all have planned. I was quite the film fan in my earlier days. I even dreamt of becoming an actress when I was a young girl. But I guess that wasn’t meant to be.” She smiles. “And that’s why I’m all the more happy to offer any help I can to aspiring filmmakers.” “Well, it’s really just a school project,” Bob admits. The Three Investigators move into the living room. It is well lit with a welcoming atmosphere. Justus notes that there are no personal photos to be seen in the room. Perhaps Mrs Sciutto doesn’t have any relatives. “Please, sit down,” invites the elderly lady. “I just have to know what you plan to do with my house!” In response, Justus, Peter and Bob explain their plans for the film project in detail. “A horrorfilm!” says Mrs Sciutto as the boys finish explaining. “Well, this house is perfect for that.” “You mean as a good backdrop for filming creepy scenes?” asks Justus. “Yes, that as well. It is an old house after all. You know, my husband’s ancestors built this house. One might say that the house is cursed.” “That sounds perfect!” says Bob. “But then, there are the puppets.” The old woman’s face darkens. “Our school friend Mary-Ann told us about that. She said the puppets are dangerous.” “Yes, I told her that right away on the phone. I wasn’t sure at first if I should really invite you all into the house. But Mary-Ann said it would be important for you.” “But the puppets aren’t that dangerous, are they?” asks Peter visibly anxious. “Hmm, I don’t think they could do you any harm, as long as they are spellbound.” “Spellbound?” Bob looks at the woman quizzically. “I guess I should start at the beginning of the story,” says Mrs Sciutto with a sigh. “It is better if you know the whole story.” She takes a sip of iced tea. “The puppets are very old – much older than this house. One of my husband’s ancestors, a Venetian artist and puppet master, made them over four hundred years ago in Italy. It is said that he put a spell on them so that he could talk to them and they would answer. Many people died when the Plague struck the city a few years later. My husband’s ancestor was afraid of dying. One of the puppets offered to save his life. To complete the deal, the puppeteer had to give the puppet his heart. In return, the puppets protected the puppeteer from death and he survived the Plague. Soon he became known as the ‘Master of Death’. It is said that from that time on, every generation of Sciuttos has had a master that performed with the puppets. None of them has ever died. Before Death could reach them, they disappeared in mysterious ways. But Death would not let them slip away so easily. It continues to seek the souls that have escaped it even after all these years.” “But,” asks Bob carefully, “your husband did die though, right?” “Yes, my husband was the first Sciutto to be buried. After the death of our youngest son, he gave up his puppetry act and in doing so gave up his title of master. He didn’t want to have anything more to do with the whole affair.” “We’re very sorry to hear that about your son,” says Bob. Peter and Justus nod solemnly in agreement. “Both of my sons died too soon,” says Mrs Sciutto sadly. “Only my husband and I were left. Shortly before his death, he drew a magical barrier with chalk around the puppets. Since then, the puppets cannot practice their sorcery and Death cannot find the house. But I still never felt completely at ease in that house.” She sighs and looks intently at the Three Investigators. “Shortly after my husband’s burial, I accidentally disturbed the chalk line. Things happened during that night that I cannot explain to this very day.” “Like what for example?” asks Justus. “I heard voices. They were speaking Italian! But that wasn’t nearly so bad as when Death appeared one night next to my bed! The next day, I almost drowned in the pool!” Mrs Sciutto sighs. “Scared out of my wits, I looked for the spell that makes the barrier in my husband’s study. I found it and next to it was a collection of newspaper articles, photocopies, and letters – all of them were about the house and the puppets. There was even an article about a woman who drowned in our pool!” Mrs Sciutto stands up and goes to a cabinet. She opens the lower door and reaches inside. “I’ve saved all of my husband’s documents in here.” She pulls out a wooden box. “The accident must have happened when my father-in-law was still a boy – many years before I married his son. The pool was already built back then.” “Can I take a look at that?” Bob points at the box. “Be my guest! I’ve made copies of them just in case. You can take these with you if you’d like,” offers Mrs Sciutto. “You’ll see that the young woman was not the first death related to the puppets. It might sound funny, but I can’t shake the feeling that Death is up to something.” Justus reaches into his pants pocket and pulls out a business card. “As you know, we’re here for our film team, but we also happen to be private detectives.” He hands the card to the old lady. “Detectives!” Mrs Sciutto looks astonished at the card in her hand. The Three Investigators We take on any case First Investigator Justus Jonas Second Investigator Peter Shaw Research and Archives Bob Andrews “We’ll figure out what’s behind the mystery of those puppets,” offers Justus. “We’ve uncovered the secrets of quite a few supposedly supernatural phenomena in the past.” “You would do that for me?” asks Mrs Sciutto surprised. “Yes, and we’ll even do it for free!” answers Peter. “I would be so happy if you would find a reasonable explanation for these happenings.” Mrs Sciutto leans the card carefully against her glass. “But I still must warn you to be careful. I already told your friend on the telephone that the chalk must not be disturbed! You can walk inside the circle and walk back out, but do not disturb the line itself! If that happens, you would be in grave...
