The correspondence between Adorno and Doflein is a unique source on musical life in post-war West Germany; it is now published for the first time in this volume. Doflein was one of the first to realize the significance and problematic nature of Adorno’s Philosophy of Modern Music, which he confronted with a consistent, pluralistic programme. The complex dispute, also on the Jugendmusikbewegung (German youth music movement), marks a turning point in music education, as Adorno demands a music-educational approach that focuses on the work of art. Apart from the correspondence, the volume comprises a manuscript on Vereinsamung oder Historismus (Isolation or Historicism), which has been prepared for print by the protagonists and is based on a radio discussion broadcasted in 1951. Three of Erich Doflein’s writings that are hardly available, his review of the Philosophy of Modern Music from 1949, and two essays from 1955 and 1959 on his pluralistic approach to music education complete the volume.
