Why did Charles V of France regularly appear in person when he wanted to establish new procedures to secure his rule or acquire resources during the Hundred Years’ War? For example, he signed administrative letters in person or attended electoral processes on the throne. The book demonstrates that the royal presence in the administration of late medieval France was a central means of establishing the acceptance of procedures and enforcing decisions. It made contemporaries aware that these practices were authorised by the king and that instructions had to be obeyed. At the same time, detailed studies of oaths, electoral procedures and royal action in various areas of governance open up new perspectives on the intensification of statehood through administration.
