On her marriage to Louis XIV’s brother Liselotte of the Palatinate became ‘Elisabeth Charlotte of Orleans’, developing into one of the most striking personalities of her day. Her letters, numbering nearly 60000, are valuable documents for the cultural historian and illustrate her critical detachment from court life. Particularly interesting are her letters to her beloved aunt Sophie, the mother of the Elector Georg and friend of Leibniz, and those to her former governess, A.K. von Harling (née von Uffeln) and her husband Privy Councillor Friedrich von Harling zu Hannover, who had been close friends of Liselotte since her time in Hanover. Although the letters were read by the censor, the duchess managed to comment astutely on political and social aberrations. She wrote with unsparing frankness about court intrigue, female vanity and her own unhappy marriage. Her lively portraits of famous contemporaries make a strong impression. With their confidential tone, these letters are an early example of the intellectual emancipation of a woman trapped in the world of court etiquette.
