This collection of sixteen essays begins with a survey of the history and the research methods of the images of other nations, with particular attention to the function of prejudices and stereotypes in literature. Then the author analyses Goethe’s observations of the characteristics of the European nations in general and his impressions of nature and people in Switzerland. Several lectures concern with the image of Italy and the Italians in German travel literature in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. A special article discusses the influence of Italian culture on the works of Thomas Mann. The migration of the Brentano-family from Italy to Germany and the physiognomic view of Aurelio Bertóla of the Rhine invert the dominant German perspective. The counterposition of North and South is also of importance in Charles Sealsfield’s descriptions of the United States and in the Argentinian perspective in a novel of Ernesto Sábato. The last two studies demonstrate the influence of the theory of climate and of the cliché of the barbarian on the ideas and images of other peoples.>
