Osteoporosis affects 28 million people in the United States alone. The
need for stable internal fixation of this type of bone is paramount. Metabolic
bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism, and
Paget's disease, are usually associated with osteoporotic or soft skeleton,
especially in the elderly patient. Orthopedic procedures in elderly patients are
costly and with the increasing age of the population these costs will continue
to escalate. Great challenges are often encountered when internal fixation is
needed for fractures or osteotomies in osteoporotic bone.
This book is designed
to present both current clinical techniques and cutting-edge knowledge in
pre-clinical research on the internal fixation of osteoporotic
bone.
